Senate Select Committee on Cybersecurity and Identity Theft Prevention Informational Hearing

SACRAMENTO, CA — Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Cybersecurity and Identity Theft Prevention, Senator Dave Min (D-Irvine) will convene the select committee for an informational titled Exploring Data Breaches: What State, Local, and Private Institutions can do to Protect Themselves and the Public on at 1:30 PM PDT on Monday, November 8, 2021.

During the hearing, a panel of experts will discuss emerging trends and threats to data security, best practices for breach prevention and response, challenges state and local governments face with cybersecurity, as well as state and local cybersecurity preparedness.

Senator Min formed the Senate Select Committee on Cybersecurity and Identity Theft in response to the December 2020 cyberattack on the Accellion File Transfer Appliance, which impacted the University of California and thousands of individuals connected to the UC system, including faculty, students, current and former employees and their dependents, retirees, and many others.

The select committee studies and makes legislative recommendations regarding threats, preparedness, and emerging technologies associated with cybersecurity as well as data privacy and protecting Californians from the growing dangers of identity theft.

WHAT: The Senate Select Committee on Cybersecurity and Identity Theft Prevention will hold an informational hearing on cybersecurity challenges and developments in California.

WHEN: 1:30 PM PDT on Monday, November 8th, 2021.

WHO: Senator Dave Min (D-Irvine) and members of the Senate Select Committee on Cybersecurity and Identity Theft Prevention.

The hearing will include testimony from the following expert witnesses:

  • Michael McNerney, Chief Operations Officer, Resilience
  • John M. Gilligan, President and Chief Executive Officer, Center for Internet Security

Dave Min represents California State Senate District 37, which is located in Orange County and includes the communities of Anaheim, Costa Mesa, Foothill Ranch, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Laguna Beach, Laguna Woods, Lake Forest, Newport Beach, Orange, Tustin, and Villa Park.

 

Dave was a University of California Irvine law professor and a former economic policy staffer in the United States Senate and for the Center for American Progress. He began his legal career at the Securities and Exchange Commission to protect the retirement security of seniors, turning down high-paying jobs to serve the public interest. Dave and his wife Jane live and work in Irvine, where they are raising their three young children.
