Senator Min Responds to Huntington Beach City Council’s Opposition to SB 1174, Voter ID Requirements

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Senator Dave Min (D-Irvine) released the following statement regarding the Huntington Beach City Council’s vote to oppose Senate Bill (SB) 1174. Senator Min’s SB 1174 would prohibit local governments from imposing voter identification (ID) requirements in local elections and reinforces the State of California’s exclusive jurisdiction on the matter.

"Contrary to the claims made by the Huntington Beach City Attorney, the City of Huntington Beach is a subsidiary of the State of California, and the fact that it is a charter city does not make it immune to California’s laws.  

That is why I introduced SB 1174: to send a clear message that local jurisdictions do not have the authority to enact their own election requirements. There are 125 charter cities in California, and we do not want to have 125 unique sets of election protocols.

Let me be clear. Election integrity is an important priority, just as voter participation is an important priority. And if there were credible evidence presented to me or any other legislator that Huntington Beach was experiencing a systemic problem with voter fraud, it would be our responsibility and duty to address that in the State Legislature. But despite all the loud and bombastic claims made by the Huntington Beach City Council majority that the 2020 election was stolen, they have not presented one shred of evidence to me or to anyone else in the Legislature of ANY voter fraud.

It is unfortunate that the Council majority here is using its power to engage in frivolous culture wars rather than actually trying to improve the lives of the residents of Huntington Beach. I urge you to do better.”
