Senator Dave Min Releases Statement on Georgia Special Election Outcome

SACRAMENTO, CA – Today, California State Senator Dave Min (D-Irvine) issued the following statement in response to Tuesday’s runoff election for the United States Senate held in Georgia:

“I want to offer my heartfelt congratulations to Senators-elect Warnock and Ossoff on their election victories. These results mark a change in leadership in the United States Senate that will be so important to the people of California and Orange County.

“We are nearly one year into the COVID-19 pandemic, an unprecedented public health crisis that has created enormous and unique hardships on states, local governments, and our economies. I have been in office for less than a month, and have already heard from countless constituents in  my  district  —  California’s  37th Senate District — about their struggles during this time.

“The message has been clear: we need help, and help on a scale that can only be provided by our federal government. Too many people are out of work or otherwise struggling to get by. Businesses are barely staying afloat. Our first responders and healthcare workers are overwhelmed. And our local and state governments are in desperate need of a temporary lifeline, as our tax revenues have plummeted even as the demands on government have soared due to COVID-19.

“For too long, California (and every other state in the Union) has had to go at it alone. I am hopeful that new leadership in the U.S. Senate will result in a signal change in the federal government’s approach to COVID and am ready to work with our federal partners to get our community the help we need.”

Senator Min represents California State Senate District 37 is located in Orange County and includes the communities of Anaheim, Costa Mesa, Foothill Ranch, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Laguna Beach, Laguna Woods, Lake Forest, Newport Beach, Orange, Tustin, and Villa Park.

Senator Min, a father of three, was a University of California Irvine Law Professor, and a former economic policy staffer in the United States Senate and for the Center for American Progress. Min began his legal career at the Securities and Exchange Commission to protect the retirement security of seniors, turning down high paying jobs to serve the public interest. He is a leading economic expert whose research focuses on banking and housing policy.
